job as a medical assistant

Looking For A Second Job?
Now that US is experiencing recession, let us admit that yes everybody is affected. In fact, it has a big blow in our economy since some of our Overseas Filipino Workers opted to go home. What a bad timing isn’t it, especially that Christmas is almost near.
Last night, I had a chance to chat with my friend’s sister who is based in California. She told me that she is now preparing to take online classes for
medical assistant. Though there are medical assistant schools to choose from over the net, she would like at least to decide the finest school and has most of hospital accreditations. And of course, she needs to take into account the fees too. Good thing about this is she is not losing hope and even looking at the positive side of life. In fact, she is even grateful cause having a degree in medical assistance could even bring her to different places. And why not?
I just wonder if my future mother and father-in-laws are considering
medical assistant as their second job in the US. Since they are based in Iowa, I am pretty sure that only a few people are taking lessons on this. I’ll try to check out with my husband-to-be about their other plans. Entire medical assistant blog: http://honeysinlove.blogspot.com/2008/10/looking-for-second-job.html

be a medical assistant

Be a Medical Assistant

The health care industry is fast growing. Have you noticed, especially here in the Philippines, most high school students want to take up nursing in college? Right now, I could come up with five people I know taking up this course. Also, many are leaving their jobs to become Caregivers because it seems more profitable. They complete a vocational course hoping to get employed in another country and get better income. Medical Transcription is also thriving. Schools offering this course are mushrooming everywhere.
Being a medical assistant is another career that could pay well. If you have not heard of this before, medical assistants help doctors accommodate patients in their offices during consultations. They update the patient’s records and interview them prior to seeing the doctor. They also check vitals, give injections, draw blood, assist in minor surgeries, call patients on behalf of the doctor, etc. I remember my doctor’s medical assistant.
Medassistant.org is an on-line medical assistant school offering a nationally (United States) accredited & certified Medical Assistant program. Convenient and flexible, you can apply on-line anytime and study at your own pace. The comprehensive curriculum will surely make you competent in the field. They have a team of educators, doctors, nurses and other health care providers always available to help you in your studies. If you think this is the career for you, visit www.medassistant.org and enroll today.

Medical Assistant - Blog

http://pro-employer.blogspot.com/2008/07/role-of-medical-assistant-in-modern.html
Many physicians are unsure of what tasks are appropriate to assign to a Medical Assistant. It is important to remember Medical Assistants are not licensed to make independent medical assessments or give advice. Although many Medical Assistants may have advanced training in certain clinical areas it is ultimately the responsibility of the supervising physician or other licensed health care provider to assure that their staff and Medical Assistants working in the office are performing duties in compliance with all governing laws.
Physicians must determine the skill level and capabilities of each Medical Assistant they supervise and take into account liability risk and quality control when assigning them their responsibilities. Physicians should provide initial direct supervision and periodically assess the quality of their work. In practices with nurse managers, medical assistants can receive additional supervision coordinated to maximize workflow in a practice. Communicating the Medical Assistant roles to other staff and clearly delineating their responsibilities is important in maximizing the productivity of the health care team.
Although legal requirements addressing the Medical Assistant scope of practice vary by state, the Medical Assistant generally works under the license of their supervising physician or the managed care organization that employs them. To learn more about medical assisting scope of practice, contact Donald A. Balasa, Executive Director and Legal Counsel of the American Association of Medical Assistants, by e-mail at dbalasa@aama-ntl.org.
Below are some of the duties that a typical medical assistant may perform (it is important to check with local and state medical boards to determine what duties a medical assistant can legally perform. It is also important to remember that a medical assistant is not a physician, nurse, physican assistant or other licensed healh care provider, they must therefore always be supervised by the appropriate licensed health care provider, after all it is the medical practioner whos license is most at risk.) The role of a medical assistant may be split into both administrative and clinical tasks.
Typical Medical Assistant administrative tasks may include: Work in reception, answer telephone, schedule appointments, process medical billing, keep financial records, file medical charts, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, transcribe dictation, send letters and triage patients over the telephone using a protocol to determine the acuity of the visit and the visit-length for scheduling purposes.
The clicical tasks of a Medical Assistant vary greatly buy state and other local laws as well as the policies of a medical office or the health care setting were they are employed. Some of the supervised clinical tasks of a Medical Assistant may include: escorting the patient to exam room, carry out patient history interviews, take and record vital signs, prepare patient for examination, provide patient information/instructions, assist with medical examinations/surgical procedures, set up and clean exam rooms, maintain medical supply inventory, restock medical supplies in patient rooms, perform venipuncture (in certain states), administer immunizations (also only in certain states), collect and prepare laboratory specimens, notify patients of laboratory results after evaluation by a physician, schedule patient appointments, translate during medical interviews with non-English-speaking patients, give prevention reminders, instruct patients about medications or special diets, basic patine medical education, perform some basic laboratory tests, prepare medications as directed by the office physician, assist in performing ECGs.
Additional medical assistant duties may include: helping to develop educational materials, educate patients about procedures, negotiate managed care contracts, manage accounts payable, process payroll, document and maintain accounting and banking records, develop and maintain fees schedules, manage renewals of business and professional insurance policies, manage personnel benefits and maintain records, perform marketing, financial and strategic planning. Also, help develop and maintain personnel, policy and procedure materials, perform personnel management functions, negotiate leases and prices for equipment and supply contracts.
There are many lwas that govern the function of a medical assistant and other medical office staff members, so a Medical Assistant should never perform any duties or functions unless specifically instructed my their supervising physician or other licensed health care professions.
Although legal requirements addressing Medical Assistants scope of practice vary by state, Medical Assistant generally work under the license of their supervising physician or the managed care organization that employs them. If you have any questions about the legal role a medical assistant may play in your practice please contact your local state medical board for advise. Post for medical assistant

a second chance in life
so what happens when there is a death in the family.a father who was brutally taken by a speeding mini bus?an aging father who suffered a heart attack and went into coma the whole week, and then died in front of your eyes?losing your own flesh and blood, by choice or by force?so what do we do next?the children of the "murdered" man slowly goes out from their shell and fly away to a totally different environment, with their emotional mother (who had not completely accepted this twisted cruel of fate) tagging along to make sure that her children are taken care of. afraid of losing this part of her as well. what sometimes we as parents do not know is that there will be a time when our children steps out of that comfort zone and venture out into their own world, without wanting their parents to squabble or hinder them. a natural learning process in any young adult. there will be a time when they completely want to be free of their caregiver and just make their own mistakes and just live their own life. so again what will happen to this widow when that time comes? preparation is crucial and reality bites. our lives move in split seconds and by the time we know it, it is already the end of the year and our child does not need us the way they used to. our job is done. continue with our lives yet again when we did not have our children with us. will it ever be the same to live the life that we had with our spouses, or worst, alone (especially in this case)?people lose their loved ones usually by force or they leave in a natural way. but what about losing our own flesh and blood by choice? what does it feel like to have to make a choice when that time comes? to abort, to pull the plug, to not resuscitate? it all sounds pretty morbid, but sadly it is happening. maybe not in yours, but i write with experience, and i have seen or heard, loved ones just had to let go by choice.but amidst this dark hours and unseemingly cruel life of ours, one has to believe that there is always a second chance in life. if not second, let it be third, tenth or the twentieth. just as long as we are still breathing and healthy, everyone and anyone deserve a second chance. i remembered hubby was saying that he had a drowning experience back when he was just a kid. luckily for him his elder cousin was there to pull him up from the current and although hubby was still breathing, he was choking sea water and he was trying to vomit out the fluids from his lungs. the cousin might not be a
medical assistant or a doctor, but he was there to perform the basic first aid to help poor hubby. i think this experience plus a couple of other narrow death experience, he has somehow managed to be there when a friend was stung by a deadly coral, an uncle who was suffering from a terrible back pain, a stranger who flagged down his car because his car was spoilt and he was rushing to the hospital (plus it was raining) and rescued abused girls under the AWAM organisation.as for me, i learned my basic survival skills from my own experience as well. though not as adventurous as my husband's, i do have to admit that i might need some help in a medical assistant school, for instance. the only triage that i did was when i fell from my bike, landed my knee on the road gravel, of which i was bleeding profusely and at that time there was no tissue etc, so i covered it with clean leaves and cycled the 3kms home. then there was the time when Angelus had an asthma attack. i was up the whole night trying to help him breathe by clearing out his lung. what i did was i made him vomit the phleghm out. it worked though. but i think if i had some knowledge as a medical assistant maybe, i might have done a whole of things differently. like not place him in that condition in the first place. but of course i learned from my mistake. whenever he has flu, the first thing i do is to make him blow the mucus out and forbade him to swallow it. that is the reason why his lungs get congested most of the time.so the bottom line is triage, basic first aid, second chance and a little bit of compassion will help in the long run, maybe to save someone's life or even yourselves. No hurt learning basic CPR or the basic human anatomy, right? Check out St. Augsutine School of Medical Assistants online at MedAssistant.org

A New Pedagogy Model for Medical Assistant Studies

According to the Wikimedia Foundation, "Pedagogy is the art or science of teaching. The word comes from the ancient Greek paidagogos, the slave who took little boys to and from school as part of paideia." The word "paidia" (παιδιά) refers to children, which is why some like to make the distinction between pedagogy (teaching children) and andragogy (teaching adults). The Latin-derived word for pedagogy, education, is much more widely used, and often the two are used interchangeably.

Pedagogy is also sometimes referred to as the correct use of teaching strategies (see instructional theory). For example, Brazilian Paulo Freire, one of the most influential educators of the 20th century, referred to his method of teaching adults as "critical pedagogy". In correlation with those teaching strategies the instructor's own philosophical beliefs of teaching are harbored and governed by the pupil's background knowledge and experiences, personal situations and environment as well as learning goals set by the student as well as the teacher.

Do to the advent of the internet and innovative technology distance education is becoming the most common method of education for the next generation of Medical Assistants. With the development of our distance education program St. Augustine Medical Assistant School continues to lead the way in high quality innovative Medical Assistant education and a new pedagogy model.

Teaching and learning at a distance is demanding. However, learning will be more meaningful and “deeper” for distant students, if the students and their instructor share responsibility for developing learning goals and objectives; actively interacting with class members; promoting reflection on experience; relating new information to examples that make sense to learners; maintaining self-esteem; and evaluating what is being learned. This is the challenge and the opportunity provided by distance education.
